Alumashield Fence Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the Alumashield Fence horse-safe?
A: Yes. The Alumashield Fence is very safe for horses and livestock because it is highly visible to the animal and its components are rounded and smooth. The aluminum composite construction of the rails and the uniquely fitted rubber grommets inside each rail connector enhance the flex of the rails. Upon impact, the rails will cushion the animal and spring back to a perfectly straight line. The animal is retained without escape or injury. Furthermore, there is no splintering or shards possible from cracking or weathering, no wires or barbs to cut the animal, and no protruding nails or screws. The Alumashield Fence is smooth, blunt and flexible and will stay that way under all weather conditions.
Q: How strong is the Alumashield Fence?
A: The Alumashield Fence is very strong and durable. The rails and posts are aluminum extrusions with cold rolled steel tubing inside as reinforcement. The 10’ rails can handle over 500 pounds of weight without incurring any damage. The Alumashield Fence components are stronger than 13 gage steel tubing and 12 gage steel posts.
Q: What are the dimensions of the Alumashield Fence components?
A: The posts and rails have an outside diameter of 2 3/8”. The fence posts are 96” in length and must be set in the ground 39” deep. The finished height of the installed fence post is 57” for any rail configuration. The rails are approximately 114” or nearly 10’ in length. Installed, the height to the top of the top rail is 54” for any rail configuration. The gate posts are 3.5” in diameter and 108” in length and must be set in the ground 54” deep for stability. The gate posts are 12 gage cold rolled steel. Installed, the gate post and the top rail are at the same height as the fence.
Q: How are the Alumashield Fence components shipped?
A: The fence components are shipped by truck in metal crates custom designed to protect the fence components and to reduce waste. The crates are easily collapsed and are reusable. Buckley Fence will arrange and pay for return shipments of the crates after use. Alone the crates weight 250 pounds; filled the crates weight as much as 1.5 tons and must be unloaded with a forklift. A full crate is 114” long, 41” wide, and 30” high.
Q: Can the Alumashield Fence handle extremely cold or hot temperatures?
A: Yes. The Alumashield Fence is an all metal product and each fence section is thermally independent of the next. There is adequate clearance between the rails and posts within each fastened connector to accommodate any slight thermal expansion and contraction that may occur. The fence components will not turn brittle in the cold or sag in extreme heat. In competing welded or hard fastened metal fencing systems, the sections are not thermally independent. Consequently, thermal expansion and contraction forces accumulate down the fence line and eventually cause posts to heave, paint to crack and fasteners to loosen. In vinyl fence systems, the amount of thermal contraction on a cold day can shrink the rails enough to cause them to fall out of the posts, and on a hot day expand enough to take up their clearance and bow wildly. With the Alumashield Fence, the negative effects of expansion or contraction are eliminated entirely with the thermally independent fence sections and adequate clearance between rails and posts.
Q: Will the Alumashield Fence ever rust?
A: No. The Alumashield Fence system exposes only powder coated aluminum alloy to the elements. The powder coating adheres exceptionally well and even if it is scratched, the rails will protect themselves with a self healing oxide. The rail connectors are also made of aluminum and uniquely fitted with rubber grommets to prevent scratching the coat. The single set screw that fastens each connector is made of forged aluminum. Every single component of the Alumashield Pipe Fence is infinitely corrosion resistant.
Q: Is the Alumashield Fence friendly to the environment?
A: Yes. The Alumashield Fence is all metal construction with architectural grade powder coating baked on at the factory. There are no chemicals like those found in treated wood or Phthalates found in PVC products. There is no ground contamination or issues with horses chewing the product during cribbing.
Q: What happens if a section of the fence is damaged and in need of replacement?
A: A section of the Alumashield Fence can be removed and replaced in just minutes. Simply unbolt the connectors, remove the damaged section(s), and slip on the new rails. If you need to replace a post, we recommend pulling out the old one including the footing, and replacing it so you can keep your fence line straight.
Q: How do I get started?
A: In order to get started, exact measurements of the property and where the fence will be positioned on the property need to be determined. This should include determining the necessary gates, corners and fence terminations. We strongly recommend you also confirm your property lines and the local building codes and restrictions, such as mandated set backs, etc. If you are using a fence installer, this can be done by the installer. Buckley Fence can then provide you with an accurate estimate of the total fencing materials required for your project. Our estimate will not include the installation cost, which will be charged separately by your fence installer.
Q: Can I install the Alumashield Fence myself?
A: Yes. The Alumashield Pipe Fence is very easy to install. Once the posts are installed correctly, the rail connectors simply slip on the posts and rails and are easily fastened at each intersection with the quick turn of just one set screw. There is no need for auxiliary clamps or props, the connectors hold themselves without scratching the posts. The set screw is a square drive with a torque control tool that snaps on a standard ratchet wrench. We loan the torque control tool for installation and ask that it be returned upon completion. Complete installation instructions can be found on the Buckley Fence Web site.
Q: Is there a local fence installer for the Alumashield Fence?
A: Yes. Any reputable fence installer can install the Alumashield Fence. We provide the materials and simple, detailed installation instructions for the fence and the matching gates and latches. We can also provide a list of the fence installers in your area.
Steel Board Fence Frequently Asked Questions
