Horse Fence

A horse fence is a beautiful addition to your property when it is built properly and performs as it is supposed to. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fences in use today that don't provide the best service, and in some cases are actually dangerous to the horse. As you are considering what type of horse fence to use, there are some very important factors to consider.

Here are a few of the questions we commonly hear being asked by horse owners, when trying to decide which horse fence is the best.

Wood fences have been used for hundreds of years. Aren't they the best way to go?

Not necessarily. Technology and new product development have brought about changes that have made it possible to have fences that are much more effective than the traditional wooden horse fence. Consider some of the drawbacks that come with using wood:

  • Ongoing maintenance – Wood will need repairs regularly, and if it's painted it will continue to need repainting on a regular basis. Part of the wood post will by nature be in the ground, and will eventually rot (a few years ago, you could use chemicals to preserve the wood in the ground but those are no longer allowed due to environmental concerns – and the newer ones are not as effective).
  • Strength – a horse fence made of wood can be broken with a strong kick, and a large horse that gets spooked can have enough adrenaline flowing to run right through a wooden fence. You want what is called a horse friendly fence.
  • Rot – moisture is unavoidable, and it is a big enemy of any fence made of wood. Even the parts of the fence above the ground are susceptible to moisture, which means the wood will rot eventually.
  • Insects – wood attracts all types of bugs, and will eventually degrade due to insect damage.
  • Cribbing – cribbing is the term used to describe what horses do to fences made of wood - they chew on them. Wood is very palatable to your horses, but it makes for an expensive snack when you have to replace your fence sooner as a result.

On the other hand our steel board horse fences have none of those disadvantages. No maintenance, no painting, they will not rot, and they will not break when a horse runs into or kicks them.

Are there some horse fencing options that are more dangerous than others?

Definitely. You have to consider the likelihood of your horse fence becoming a source of injury to the horse. If you have a fence made of PVC or vinyl, they can break into shards that become very sharp pointed objects. These are disastrous for a horse. Wood can potentially do the same thing, and have the added danger of nails. And a broken fence means the horse can escape. Our fences cannot be broken by a horse eliminating the potential for escape or injury. The worst damage would be to bend them, and even that would be a very difficult feat to accomplish. We use no nails, so that danger is eliminated as well.

Which fence material is the most affordable?

That depends on if you are considering just the immediate costs of purchase and installation, or the long term factor of how soon the fence will need to be replaced. PVC/vinyl costs about 2/3 the price of a steel board fence to purchase, and wood costs about half. However, our fences last over twice as long as PVC, and three to five times as long as wood – that translates to a better value over the long run. And they look good the whole time!
